Company visits

What can you expect?

At the Auction of Mechlin there is a hive of activity. Sometimes, the staff handles up to 3,000 tons of vegetables per sale day. Therefore, it is worth visiting the largest cooperative society as an auction in Europe. Our experienced company guide will tell you more about the history of the world of auctions, and more particularly about the auction of Mechlin, will teach you how the system of auctions functions, will pilot you through the route of the vegetables - from the market gardener to your local supermarket -, and will let you personally witness the sales activities with the auction clock(s).

Price

A visit to the Auction of Mechlin costs 50 EUR per group, to which 1 EUR per visitor must be added. A group of for example 25 persons therefore pays 75 EUR.

Practical details

Individual visits to the auction are not possible. We only receive groups between 20 tot and 40 persons. In principle, a visit starts at 9 am. You must bear in mind that each visit takes at least an hour and a half. The visits are set taking into due consideration the activities of the auction and the diary of the company guide. The auction always has the right to refuse groups. The groups check in at the visiting address: Mechelsesteenweg 120.

The groups that visit the auction of Mechlin can have breakfast prior to the visit or have lunch after the visit in the cafeteria of the auction. The person responsible for the group will himself/herself contact the business manager at +32 15-56 52 53.

’t GROM – Midzeelhoeven

't grom’t Grom (Vegetable museum) is situated on the site of the "Midzeelhoeve", the 18th century long-facaded farmhouses and the accompanying barns of which are listed monuments. Initially they were leased farmhouses of the abbey of Roosendael. Today the site is owned by the municipality of Sint-Katelijne-Waver which leased them out on a long lease to the vzw Midzeelhoeve.  ‘t Grom is a museum where the valuable agricultural heritage is being opened up through and interactive presentation. Apart from that, the vegetable museum also acts as a promotion platform for vegetables, healthy food and durable consumption.

Two subjects are at the centre of the interactive exhibition: the soil, the seed and the growth on the one hand, and health and the history of the eating culture on the other hand.  Audiovisual set-ups give the visitor a view of the path ‘from the ground to the mouth’.  The exhibition can be visited both individually and in group.  As part of an original publicity campaign for healthy food, 't Grom also gives cooking lessons and cooking demonstrations for groups and cooking sessions with schools.   The prestigious cooking island is the ideal place to do that.

Moreover ’t Grom is situated in rural surroundings with landscaped vegetable gardens, bee hall, insect wall, composting unit and weather station. In the educational vegetable gardens the attention is drawn to cultivation in an environmentally friendly, durable, but also artistic manner.

Planckendael Animal Park

In Planckendael Animal Park, located in the green area of Muizen near Mechlin, people try to fit in the animal accommodation into the scenery the best possible way. Some parts of the park remain untouched, as a consequence of which you can see wild flowers and plants all year round. Planckendael not only houses exotic animals such as rhinoceros, bisons, and various types of antelopes. A lot of attention is paid to animals of our own region as well. Because of their retired way of life or their rarity, you barely get to see these animals in our nature. In Planckendael you can meet many of them. For, European beavers swim in Planckendael, elegant storks glide in the air, otters play in the water, and badgers sleep in their earth. Guided theme walks are offered, which are adapted to the age, the level, and the interests of the group.
